Expectations and Material Perks

Review the list of expectations.
Please note that we expect a 2-year commitment from all applicants. This is because SPICE II Fellows will be required to serve a 2-year term. During the first year, they will be working with you in the classroom an average of 2 days per week. During the second year, they will be working with you 2-3 days per month. We expect preparation time to be vastly reduced relative to the first year. Obviously this will be best if the fellows are working with the same teacher from one year to the next.
Every year, science teachers at Hawthorne, Howard Bishop, Lincoln, Mebane, Oak View and Westwood will have the opportunity to reapply. After the first year, a teacher can have a first-year Fellow and a second-year Fellow at the same time. As a SPICE Teacher Partner, you will receive:

  • A stipend of $4,500 (to be paid over 2 years, but mostly in the first year) $1,250 for supplies or SPICE II activities; Computers and other technology for classroom use; A co-teacher (SPICE Fellow) with a strong science background for 2 consecutive school years; The opportunity for an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to represent SPICE II at national conference
  • In-service points for participation in the Summer Institute (July 28-Aug 8, 2008)

The SPICE Advisory Board is keenly interested in spreading SPICE II resources amongst all the Alachua County middle schools with significant populations of disadvantaged youth. Because of this and because there will be fewer Fellows in
SPICE II, schools and teachers who have previously been in SPICE should not assume they will be selected to participate in SPICE II. We are likely to place emphasis on giving other schools and teachers a chance to participate.
