The following information is for interested graduate students.
Teachers, please click the "Teacher Information" tab.

  • 2 year appointment. The first year as a Type I Fellow. The second year as a Type II Fellow. Start date is July, 2008. Stipend = $30,000 for a Type I Fellowship in the first year; $3500 for a Type II Fellowship the second year Cost of education allowance = $10,500 for the first year only. (Please note that how this allowance is spent is at the discretion of the SPICE II Advisory Board. Most of it goes towards tuition and fees, and health insurance for the Fellows.) Type I Fellows must spend an average of 15 hours/week for 52 weeks dedicated to SPICE activities. During the school year, 10 hours/week in the classroom and 5 hours/week of preparation are expected. Time commitment of Type II Fellows will be negotiated with Fellows and the SPICE Advisory Board ( 2-3 days per month in the classroom.) Type I Fellows must participate in mentoring activities (60 hrs.). Fellows must participate in Summer Institute. Full attendance is required. (We are strict about this! Do not consider applying for a SPICE Fellowship if you cannot commit to the entire two weeks of the institute.) All Fellows must enroll in a graduate seminar and Type I Fellows must participate in a Short Course provided by SPICE. Transportation to and from middle schools is the responsibility of the Fellow. Fellows should feel comfortable working with adolescents and those of different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Fellows will be expected to participate in assessment activities of SPICE (e.g., taking surveys and participating in discussions with an outside evaluator).
  • Type I Fellows will work with a teacher to design a module focused on ecosystem health and sustainability. This module should specifically addresses national and state science standards and that stresses hands-on exploration.
